In my view there are two types of partners; those who really love what they do and have no problem doing it, and those that really love the money (I'm talking 7 figures every year) and the prestige of being a partner. BigLaw generally doesn’t want to risk a hire on someone who doesn’t have this base of experience. There may be exceptions for government attorneys with relevant experience: a white-collar defense department may value prosecution experience. Regulatory departments may consider hiring out of the regulator ranks. Etc.
